The Vaartkom is the largest urban renewal project in Leuven and an environment in constant evolution. MO KA was asked to create an accessible open air exhibition to expose the highlights of this urbanistic project.

The 5 main themes were approached via personal testimonials, told by authentic inhabitants of the area. They were displayed on a concrete steel mesh grid.

On the floor of the exhibition spaces was a road map of the Vaartkom. You allmost literally stepped into the Vaartkom.

The exhibition consisted of 5 bus shelters for 5 main themes: Urban development, Green and water, Patrimonium, Creativity and Sustainability.

After 5 years of urban development the city of Leuven wanted to give the public an update on the progress with the 'Vaartkom weerspiegeld 2015' exhibition. One of several communication channels was the temporary open-air exhibition on the riverbank.

Each theme was accompanied by a render of a possible future for different areas in the Vaartkom.

Today, this former industrial site is one of the largest urban development projects in Flanders and is evolving into a modern living and working environment on the riverbank.

Vaartkom Weerspiegeld was aimed at an audience of creative individuals and businesses for whom the industrial past has an added emotional value. The exhibition reflected the creative world of the inhabitants and responded to the feeling of urban exploration.

The majority of visitors were passersby with little time. The exhibition had to have an direct visual impact.

Bus shelters were used as an efficient, inexpensive and recognizable urban structure. The design of the open-air exhibition reflected the industrial character that is quintessentially Vaartkom.

The use of construction materials such as chipwood panels and concrete steel mesh reflected the industrial background of the Vaartkom.

The large flags represented the maritime aspect of de Vaartkom and offer a high visiblity.

The exhibitions' objectives were to position Vaartkom as a contemporary neighbourhood with a strong human voice, and give an impression of a possible future.
